The SSE Women’s FA Cup – First Round Qualifying
Peterborough Northern Star Ladies vs Northampton Town Ladies
Northampton Town Ladies kicked off the 2018/19 season with a tough first round qualifying draw in The SSE Women’s FA Cup against Peterborough Northern Star Ladies. Star ladies are in the league above competing in the Eastern Regional Premier league. The two sides last met in the 2017 Northamptonshire County Cup Final where Star won 5-0. Cobbler’s ladies were looking to cause an upset following an improvement to their squad over the last year along with impressive signings to strengthen the squad.
The development and improvement of the Cobblers team was evident from the start and the match was very even from start of finish with both sides showing their technical and physical abilities throughout the match.
Cobbler’s ladies went 1-0 ahead after 14 minutes with a superb free-kick from Alex Bartlett from the 20 yards, looping over the helpless Star Ladies goal keeper. Cobbler’s dominance continued when Leah Stacey put Emma Dunmore through one on one with Star’s keeper who came charging out but Emma very confidently chipped the ball over the on rushing keeper to put Cobblers 2-0 ahead.
Star Ladies took this as their wake up call and came back strongly with a header by Bronwyn Mulheron from a corner at 31 minutes and then Jessica Driscoll headed in Star Ladies second goal at 42 minutes.
Half Time: Star Ladies 2 – 2 Cobblers Ladies
Cobbler’s ladies made a half time substitution seeing new signing right winger Abbie Reboul make way for another new signing, Grace Adeyinka. The second half saw some great football played by Cobbler’s Ladies despite the persistent pressure from Star.
After 53 minutes, Alex Bartlett fought through several players and put a delightful through ball for Emma Dunmore who once again found herself one on one with an on rushing goal keeper. Emma yet again showed her brilliance, chipping keeper again to put Cobbler’s Ladies 3-2 ahead.
Star Ladies were undeterred and at 60 minutes Cassie Steward drew the game level again at 3-3. Star Ladies stepped up the pressure and were rewarded with a 4th goal only 3 minutes later by Katie Steward to put the home side ahead for the first time in the game.
Cobbler’s ladies made two substitutions, seeing right back Reanne Mullen and new signing, centre forward Francesca Partridge come on for defensive midfielder Kellie Billenness and centre back Hayley Matthews. This saw yet another change the team dynamic but showed the character and diversity of this ever improving Cobbler’s side and who now formed a more aggressive and attacking formation.
These changes saw Cobbler’s take charge of the game once again with numerous shots from all over the pitch but credit to the Star Ladies keeper who kept Cobblers out with some fantastic fingertip saves and the cross bar also came to Star’s aid.
At 81 minutes Cobblers were awarded a penalty and Emma Dunmore stepped up to secure her first hat-trick of the season although first hitting the right hand post but the ball still diverted into the back of the net. Both sides pushed for a late winner in the dying minutes of the second half. Star thought they had won it when a shot from outside the box saw, Cobbler’s keeper Jo Daniel pull off a stunning save right on the goal line to keep the score level. Cobblers went on to push for their winner seeing shots from Francesca Partridge and Emma Dunmore but none prevailed.
Full Time: Star Ladies 4 – 4 Cobblers Ladies
In the 30 minutes of extra time both teams made their last changes with Cobblers substituted left back Emma Billenness for midfielder Francesca Speck. Both sides had chances but on what was turning out to be a very hot day, both teams were starting to tire.
Full time after extra time: Star Ladies 4 – 4 Cobblers Ladies
On to penalties and Leah Stacey stepped up to score Cobblers first penalty. Goal keeper Jo Daniel put Cobblers in the driving seat by saving Star’s Jessica Driscoll’s first penalty. Unfortunately, Cobblers could not convert the rest of their penalties and Star Ladies Emma Pollard, Katie Steward and Frances Peeling showed their composure scoring their next 3 penalties.

Manager Gary Moss, thoughts on the match
‘‘Very proud of my players today showed great character and determination against a side in a higher division. Performance was very good a few areas to tweak but to keep going and battling the way the players did in the heat showed real desire and were just unlucky in the pens. We look forward to the next game”
